As 2009 has only 40 days left, I have been thinking a lot lately about what painting project to do in 2010. This year my main project has been San Diego 100, which is winding up within a few weeks. I've also kept working on my Paris Café series. Since I've been having so much fun with Paris Café, I will continue this series. But I need something else for a change... I will have to put on my thinking cap.
Speaking of a change, one of the biggest changes that occurred in the history of Parisian cafés was a smoking ban that went into effect at the beginning of 2008 (read related post). Since this is a ban on smoking inside enclosed public places, people can still smoke outside. This means, crowded outside terraces. It's been said that outdoor seating has never been more popular, even in the dead of winter, and they are literally spreading out further on the sidewalk. In this painting, a café in the background is still closed (it's early Sunday morning) and tables and chairs are stacked up high. But, once it's open, we can imagine they will be grabbed quickly by those who need to light up.
