Milan has been one of my favorite cities in the world ever since I first made a visit a long time ago as a student. Little did I know then that I might be back for a wonderful exhibition/workshop opportunity one day. Immagini dell'Acqua, the 40th anniversary international watercolor exhibition organized by the Associazione Italiana Aquarellisti (AIA), opened its doors to the public on October 2. It is with a great honor that I am participating, as an invited guest artist, in the 40th anniversary exhibition of the Associazione Italiana Acquerellisti (AIA). Mr. Fernando Cavalieri, the AIA's President, together with Ms. Cristina Bracaloni, the AIA's Vice President, very kindly extended the invitation to me earlier this year to take part in the events including the opening of this special exhibition and live demonstrations. From Plein-Air Sketch to Studio Painting

About nine years ago, I started out both as a plein-air painter and as a studio artist. As a watercolorist who paints in both environments, I have come to realize that there are unique qualities in each type of work. A painting done on location is my direct response to the landscape. I attempt to capture the whole experience of being there. For that purpose, I need to concentrate intensely to work fast. After a long voyage at sea all the way from Japan, an expansive view of Marseille was the first thing my father saw as his ship pulled into the harbor. Last Sunday the Mansion at Strathmore was packed with our friends and visitors as the North American Watercolor Artists (NAWA) celebrated the opening of our first show in America, "Stepping Over the Line." Award at San Diego Watercolor Society 31st International Exhibition

I am very happy to learn that my painting "Road to Eiheiji Temple, Fukui, Japan IX" has been given by juror Carrie Burns Brown the Benbrook Family Award in the upcoming San Diego Watercolor Society 31st International Exhibition. It will be on view at the SDWS Gallery, San Diego, California, from October 1 through October 31. The opening reception will be held at the same venue on October 7, 5-9pm. North American Watercolor Artists To Represent the U.S. in the 9th International Watercolor Biennial in Mexico

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Kathleen Alexander, Carol Carter, Mark E. Mehaffey, Thomas W. Schaller, Nicholas Simmons and myself have formed the North American Watercolor Artists, a group of six U.S. watercolor artists, to represent the United States in the IX International Watercolor Biennial in Mexico. The exhibition will be held at the National Museum of Watercolor in Mexico City, December 5, 2010 through February 13, 2011. Artists representing countries in five continents are participating in the Biennial, which is invitation-only.
