Momiji means Japanese maples. But, written in Japanese character, it is also read koyo, which means reddening of autumn leaves. So in essence, what the word momiji refers to is more than specific tree species. It means, more widely, leaves turning colors to red, yellow, orange, crimson, etc., etc...
It is also about admiring, celebrating and marveling at the show of incredible autumnal colors. Although subtle, I feel the word even connotes a mix of emotions the Japanese people may have - awed as well as helpless - about the ephemeral nature of happenings around us.
