Kitano Shrine, Kyoto II, Japanese Landscape Painting

Kitano Tenmangu (or Kitano Shrine) is known among Kyoto people as Tenjin-san. The shrine was dedicated to Sugawarano Michizane, a high-ranking government official and scholar during the 9th century, who had the title of Tenjin (Heavenly Deity), thus its name.

In this painting, visitors to Tenjin-san are gathering around an incense stand to purify themselves - one of the rituals to perform after entering the shrine grounds.

Your Kitano Shrine Painting is wonderful, Keiko. HOW do you paint your shadows like that? I was in Kyoto 40 years ago, and your painting brings up the exact "feeling" I had back then. Good Job, as always!

Thank you, Sheila! Some places in Kyoto have changed over time, but many others and traditions are still the same as they were for hundreds of years in this ancient capital of Japan. I hope you'll have a chance to visit there again in the future.
