October is more commonly called ju gatsu (the tenth month) but is also called kam(i)nazuki (the month without gods) in Japanese.

An idea behind this is that all the shinto gods are gathering at the Grand Shrine in the town of Izumo, leaving the rest of Japan without their presence in October (of the lunar calendar).  On the other hand, Izumo gets crowded suddenly with visits from thousands of gods and pilgrims; therefore only here this month is called kamiarizuki (the month with gods).

This annual event has been more than welcomed by the people in Izumo and they celebrate it with a big festival called Kamiari-sai every year.
