Every painting I create is an emotional response to the subject, so it is important for me to be able to feel connected to it from the outset.  But it is sometimes difficult to go beyond the initial stage of my creative process if I already feel too strongly about it.  When the intensity of such emotions is overwhelming, I have found that they don't allow my creativity to freely interact with the subject.  Sometimes I push on and other times I don't.

Journey Home is a series I started back in 2005 when I had just begun painting seriously.  About a street scene in the first painting in the series, Journey Home I, I said, "something about the scene pulled me strongly into it... the emotion I felt instantly connected me to my past, my childhood growing up in Japan.  (The painting) opened up a part of me that wants to explore deeper into my heritage. "

This series has been going on and off since then.  I must admit that I have avoided painting those familiar Japanese scenes especially when I felt too sentimental.  However, I am learning, little by little, to detach myself from strong emotions in order to communicate my artistic vision more clearly.
